Hardwood floor cleaning
Cleaning hardwood floors is easy as long as you avoid damaging them with vinegar and water. This is an old wives tale that only works on waxed floors. Since waxing floors is mostly a thing of the past, vinegar and water is bad advice. We recommend the use of proper hardwood floor cleaner that is PH sensitive to hardwood.
If you have just had your floors refinished, you can protect your investment by following these guidelines:
- Wait 24 hours before walking on your floors. If they look wet, the floors are wet!
- Wait 48 hours before putting furniture back onto floors. Be patient, this is an investment. When putting furniture back, please make sure that you "lift and place". NO DRAGGING! This is the Golden rule. Even refrigerators with wheels when pushed can and probably will leave deep grooves in your hardwood floors. Be careful and rent a dolly with inflatable wheels.
- Invest in felt pads for all chairs, sofas and table feet.
- Place floor mats at all entry points and area rugs/ runners in high traffic areas like hallways. The first five feet is where the grit and rocks are knocked off. The mats help the process quicken.
- When cleaning, use a hardwood floor cleaner that is dedicated for hardwood floors. Even professional cleaning services get this wrong. Let them know what they need to use.
- DO NOT use Vinegar and Water as a cleaner! Vinegar is on the acid side of the pH scale and will etch/dull your finish. This goes against hardwood floor maintenance fundamentals.
If you follow these hardwood floor maintenance guidelines, you will avoid many hardwood floor scratches and your floors can last many years longer than you expect. Another thing to do is be conscious of the floors state. If you can do this, then you will recognize any significant wear before your new floors become old worn floors. By doing this, you can stay ahead of the game by implementing a maintenance program to your hardwood floors. Applying a Maintenance program, like recoating, would be a way of protecting your investment and saving money down the line.
A hardwood floor maintenance program can benefit many.
- A home owner that has suffered superficial wear/ scratches
- A home owner that has Engineered hardwood floors. Very limited life expectancy!
- A business that can't afford to be closed more than 1 day
- A home owner on a tight budget that wants to give their hardwood floors a quick and affordable face-lift and an additional layer of protection. A recoat is basically repeating the very last step in the sand and finish cycle. Adding an additional layer of Polyurethane is usually a one day process and is very affordable.
What can you expect from a Re-Coat?
- Adding a layer of polyurethane to resist wear and abuse.
- The removal of superficial scratches and superficial flaws
- The even appearance of sheen that may have been lost to improper cleaners or wear.
- A restored hardwood floor for a fraction of the price of a full sand and finish.
