Screening hardwood floors
Buffing hardwood, floor polishing or screening hardwood floors doesn't always resort to refinishing hardwood floors. Maintenance is vital when you choose wood for flooring. What is screening and how does it clean my wood floors? Screening is a process of putting a screen on a buffer and lightly sanding the floor. This process is archaic and hardly used by the modern wood worker. The process used today is called burnishing and differs slightly depending on the contractor. To say the least, it is a less agressive method of acclomplishing the same task of floor preparation. This method with the right vacuums are virtually dust free.
Restoring hardwood floors doesn't always resort to refinishing hardwood floors. If your hardwood floors are in very good condition, they are a candidate for a re-coat. The picture to the right displays a hardwood floor that has been through the screen and recoat process. This engineered hardwood floor had minor wear and scratches and we were able to perform hardwood restoration at the lowest cost to the homeowner. Buffing hardwood floors yourself can sound simple until you rent the buffer and it throws you into the sheet rock. This is not an exageration.
If you want to eliminate those fine scratches in your harwood floors or make your dull hardwood floors shine like new, then you might consider screening hardwood floors.
The process of burnishing wooden floors
Recoating a hardwood floor involves very light mechanical abrasion in combination with a chemical abrasion to soften the old finish for optimum adhesion of the new polyurethane to be applied. If these steps are not excersized properly, delamination will occur forcing you into a complete refinishing process. Again, recoating hardwood floors is more accurately used as a maintenance program to avoid going through the entire process of sanding your floors.· It is very affordable and the results can vary depending on the technique, products and materials used along with the method of application and the spread rate of the material being applied.· Some companies have done a wonderful job at vilifying the word sanding and only prescribe a recoating process for a simple reason. They are incapable of a complete floor resurfacing.
Beware of the propaganda set forth by companies promising quick results
- Companies who advocate recoating as their primary restoration method for hardwood floors should be questioned. Most of these companies are scamming their customers and are posing as legitimate C-15 flooring contractors.· Check their license number out with the California state license board and don't be surprised. Our number is 903508 Without a valid license number, you have no recourse in the event when something goes wrong.
- These people don't have the necessary machinery or tools to take on a complete resurfacing of hardwood floors,i.e., belt sanders, edgers, hand tools, dcs vacuums.
- These people don't have the skill set and know how to take on a task that could cost you thousands if performed incorrectly.
FACT: Insurance companies "Will Not" insure contractors who are not licensed.
Why Re-coat your floors?
There are five basic reasons why people choose this method:
- Prevention of Dust with zero mess!· This is a 100% proven method of "Coating" your floors without dust.· Most people will refer to this as a "Dustless or Sandless" method of coating hardwood floors.·
- ·Limited options or Choices.· You cannot sand and refinish some types of hardwood flooring like thin layered engineered hardwood floors due to the fact that you could sand through the wear layer and destroy thousands of dollars in flooring.
- ·Economical reasons.· Today’s economy is tight and this alternative to a complete sand and refinish job is the way to save money.·
- ··If your hardwood floors are in good condition and only require a new shine or face lift, this is the perfect method.
- ·A regular maintenance program intended to maximize the look of your investment while simultaneously delaying the full refinishing process that will await you if you don’t maintain your floors.·
What kind of wood floors can I "Re-Coat?"
- Engineered hardwood flooring
- All solid wood flooring·
- Some laminates depending on current condition of flooring
What are the benefits to Re-Coating your hardwood floors?
- Price- without a doubt cheaper than the full process. About 50% or so.
- Absolutely, 100% no Dust! A true Dustless method.
- Very fast process- Most of the time a one day service.
What are the fall backs to Re-Coating?
- If we are dealing with an old or worn floor, ReCoating does not create a new surface. A complete Sand and Refinishing is by far superior aesthetically. If you want the optimum appearance, National floors needs to create a "New Surface" on the hardwood floor by sanding.
- Deep scratches are still recognizable. Some gouges can be "Touched up", but are still recognizable to a sharp eye. If the floor is stained, the repair or make-up will be evident.
- Some competitors boast a 4 hour service. Quality takes time and should not be rushed.
- If you have High expectations, recoating will probably NOT satisfy you, regardless of who does the work.
