Hardwood Stairs parts you need to know before ordering the work. 

  • The "Tread" is the horizontal piece of hardwood.  This is the part of the stair that you actually step on to.
  • The "Riser" is the vertical piece or the face of the step.  
  • The "Skirt" is the side molding that can run on one or both sides of the stair run  

Stair materials 

The "Stair Tread" can be built out of a single piece of stair hardwood, usually oak, which is the premium way to go. 

The secondary option is to build the tread out of flooring that you probably used elsewhere in the home.  This can be just as beautiful, but instead of 1 solid piece of wood, there are many pieces to the hardwood step.  The floor used to build the step can be solid hardwood flooring or engineered hardwood flooring.  If you go this route, just know that you will need to purchase bull nosings for each step.  This could drive the price per step up.

The "Stair Riser" is typically a solid piece of Wood riser material or MDF (multi dense fiberboard).  The other option is to use flooring.    

The "Skirt" is typically something that is pre-existing.    

Stair building options

When building your stairs, you of course have the option of using whatever hardwood material is available.  

The other option is to change the riser material.  You can go for a traditional look, where the riser is the same material as the tread.  The other option is to have the riser built out of an MDF (multi dense fiber board).  This is usually painted white and is more modern.

Refinishing hardwood stairs is very much like refinishing hardwood floors.  When sand and finishing hardwood stairs, you should know we don't have the space to use our large machines.  Therefore, restoring hardwood stairs takes more time due the extra hand work that is involved. 

If you take a look to the right, you can see "Option A" or "Option B".  Please make sure to communicate to our estimator which option you have when ordering the sand and finishing of your hardwood stairs.  There is a price difference.    

You will have the opportunity, if the stairs are wood, to stain the treads and or risers virtually any color you want.  Manipulating the color of the wood by means of staining is a great option for hardwood stairs.  After the color choice is made and applied, the stairs are then coated 3 times with commerical grade polyurethane.  Commercial grade finish cannot be purchased over the counter.
