For that reason, questionable repairs should be identified before the final sanding and finishing stages whenever possible. Correcting them first gives the repaired area a better opportunity to become part of the finished floor rather than standing out after the project is complete.
Transitions Between Rooms Matter
Open floor plans and years of remodeling can create situations where hardwood from different parts of a home eventually becomes visually connected.
A doorway that once separated two rooms may be widened. A wall may be removed completely. Hardwood may be extended into a room that previously contained carpet, tile, or another flooring material.
When these areas become part of one visual space, differences in board direction, width, color, and previous finish become much easier to see.
Planning the repair and refinishing work as a complete project can produce a more intentional result than treating each small section independently.

If most of the hardwood remains structurally sound, localized repairs and professional refinishing may allow the existing floor to continue serving the home. When the flooring is excessively thin, unstable, extensively damaged, or made up of incompatible sections that cannot reasonably be integrated, replacement may be the better recommendation.
We would rather make that decision after inspecting the actual floor than recommend replacement simply because the project looks complicated.
