Aggressive sanding is not necessarily better sanding.
Deep dents, stains, gouges, and other isolated defects can penetrate farther into the wood than normal surface wear. Attempting to completely remove one deep defect by sanding the entire connected floor to the same depth can sacrifice considerably more usable hardwood than necessary.
In some situations, a localized board repair is preferable. In others, reducing the appearance of an imperfection without completely eliminating it may be the better long-term decision.

Has the Hardwood Already Been Refinished?
